The Art of Seduction

Set the atmosphere, and half the battle is won.
"Set the atmosphere, and half the battle is won."
We have a lot more sex than we used to, and it's also more adventurous and satisfying for all. But the old timers had seduction, and we often make do with a lunge, a grope, a super-short skirt, or a shot of tequila. But seduction doesn't have to be either old-fashioned or overt. When done right, seduction can get you and the other person even more excited about being with each other. Because seduction is the slowly unfolding promise of sex, you want to make sure that the person you are seducing gets a taste of what is on offer. Seduction is a game, and you win if you score. It has its own rules; Robert Greene and Joost Elffers, authors of The Art of Seduction, write that seduction is "a world you enter, a world that is separate and distinct from the real world". Here are a few classic tips on how to successfully create that world:

Flirt
Forgotten how to do that, have you? It means smiling at people while looking into their eyes. Flirting involves letting the person know you're interested in them. We all love to gab ourselves, and giving the other person the chance to do so - by asking them questions about themselves - is what makes people great flirts. Look at the person you want to seduce like you wish no one else were around, and brush past them when you walk by. Give the person compliments. This is all about making the other person feel very, very good in your presence.

Be a little suggestive
Greene and Elffers know the power of insinuation; it occupies a whole chapter in their book. An interesting tactic is to bring the conversation around to sex, but never crudely. A slightly jokey tone works really well. If you have any interesting experiences to share, do so. If you recently read a little-known statistic about people's sexual habits, mention it. And if you can be really smooth about it, you can jokingly refer to your own prowess in certain areas.

Use body language
Touch them lightly on the shoulder or caress their cheek. Lean in to the person. Make - and hold - eye contact , and massage the nape of their neck. Think of what makes you feel desired, and provided it's not too much, do that for the other person. In later stages, a little can't-help-myself feeling up can add urgency to the situation.

Play a game
It doesn't have to be strip poker, though that can also be a lot of fun. Think of any game without complicated rules, and then make the loser of each round offer favors that are playfully sexual or suggestive.

Tease
Nothing signals to a person that you have the hots for them than if you can't stop teasing them. So tease the person you want about a little tic they have, or with the promise of a shared secret, for example.

Lay a trail
This is a great thing to do if you've already slept with someone before, and want to spice things up. Lay a trail from the front door to your bedroom. It could be of flowers or articles of clothing. Either way, they'll be turned on by the desire expressed and the effort, and fall happily into the seduction game.

Sensuality in all things
Set the atmosphere, and half the battle is won. Flowers, especially classic red roses, work for men and women, and signal your intentions. Dim lighting and soft, sexy music are essential. If you like to dance, why not clear a small space where you can do so. Candles are lovely, but make sure that they aren't overly-scented. A flavorsome, stimulating meal is a perfect start to an evening of seduction. Just make sure that the food is light and not too garlicky or oniony. Classic seduction food includes oysters, sun-dried tomatoes, rocket, asparagus, a small steak, snails, pistachio nuts, basil, and avocado. For later, try figs, strawberries, chocolate, coffee, and a glass of bubbly. If you have a hot-tub, lay it on before the meal. Get clean, fresh-smelling, high thread-count cotton sheets.

Dress for success
Make sure you dress the part. Wear a light, sexy fragrance. Be showered and powdered to within an inch of your life. Don't use too much over-scented product on your body or hair. Choose clothes that let the other person know you're making an effort. Every stitch on your body should be clean and presentable, naturally. This means freshly-laundered everything, and really, really good underwear. It's going to be taken off you, and potentially also be put to naughty use, so make sure it's hot. Man or woman, also make sure that you wear soft fabrics, and get some red in there, whether in the form of a corsage, a tie, a purse, or a handkerchief.
