Some things we all know about dreams: veggies can be phallic, dreams exaggerate conflict to resolve it, and many innocent-seeming dreams are sexual. What do those overtly erotic dreams mean? Freud wrote hundreds of pages suggesting that dreams are the parallel realities created by our minds to use the stuff of our normal lives. It is a great attitude to take when it comes to erotic dreams, because they can be about many issues and desires, not just sex. The key thing to remember is-they are dreams, not reality. They are nothing to feel guilty or worried about.
You're repressing something
It is pretty obvious, isn't it? According to Freud, the more you try to push a feeling away, the more likely it is that it will work itself out in your dreams. An erotic dream is often a result of nothing more than a person not having enough sexual outlets. At other times, repression can be a good thing because it is best not to act on certain desires, such as, having sex with a sibling, the spouse of a friend or sibling, or an animal. Dreams provide a safe, harm-and-consequence-free way to indulge. There is no need to be ashamed.
Fantasy Island
For some people, dreams are the perfect mode to act out fantasies that are out of their reach or that are just pure fantasies. Not everyone will have a chance to get hot and sweaty with Keanu Reeves or Heidi Klum, but we are all equal in dreamland. Alternatively, maybe you are uncertain about S&M or making out with a transvestite, but it is something you wonder about. Dreams come to your rescue.
Great expectations
Gayle Delaney, author of All About Dreams, suggests that if you dream about sex with a celebrity or your boss, you could be expressing your desire to move up and ahead in society. The dream becomes a way to affirm your belief that you are destined for bigger things. Alternatively, the dream could suggest whom you really look up to in the world.
Anxiety attacks
Some dreams that feature unusual or violent sexual encounters could indicate anxiety in real life - not necessarily about sex, but about a relationship, your health, or even that of your children. Such dreams are also a stress-release mechanism for the anxiety that results from everyday conflicts and difficult decisions.
Deja vu
Gillian Holloway, author of The Complete Dream Book, says that sometimes the similarities in character or appearance among different people can lead you, by association, to dream of sleeping with someone quite inappropriate. In the context of dreams about relatives or siblings, she says that they might have the same positive personality traits as your partner or spouse, or even share some physical resemblance to them. This is one version, called "displacement," in dream language. It is nothing to concern you.
Nothing to do with sex
Really. Some super sexy dreams are just random gifts. They have nothing to do with a sexual fantasy, or anxiety, or free association, or ambition - or anything that you could possibly think of. They are just erotic dreams. Treat them like a naughty film or lusty book: meant to be enjoyed and taken as such. Sexologists say that one in three people under age twenty-five actually orgasms while sleeping, and they do not always remember what brought it on-so if you have a dream that you remember, enjoy the memory.
