Book By: Judy Silverstein, Michael Lasky
Real-world virtual dating
Online dating has undergone a sea of change in reputation. What was once looked at as a slightly shady pastime, is now a very legitimate way to meet people. Most of us know at least one happy couple who have met on the internet. Online dating is becoming one of the fastest and most effective ways for single people to meet other singles.
In fact, Online Dating for Dummies' opening observations are so persuasive; you're inclined to agree with the authors when they write, "we are amazed that the human race has managed to propagate without the benefit of computers up to this point in time."
The authors themselves met through online dating. We dare say that writing a book together is as much of a test of a relationship as marriage, so it is easy to gain faith in the possibilities of this method.
Clear layout
As with all of the Dummies series, this book is so clearly and logically laid out that reading just the table of contents is instructive. Fans of the series will find the layout they've become used to, with those big headings and instructive icons. Newbies will be pleasantly surprised by how easy the information is to access.
The text is broken up so that the book is as easy to read through as it is to dip in and out of. And either way, the chatty style makes it a pleasure. For this reviewer, the nicest part of the Dummies series is the cartoon that precedes every chapter.
People who are a little leery of online dating will find value in chapters that deal with safety and ways to unmask frauds. Misconceptions and stereotypes about the kind of people found online are quickly cleared up.
Those wily ways
The sections on interacting effectively with dating sites also deal with the wily ways of some services. Learn some of the tricks of the online dating trade and, more important, learn to avoid the traps.
One tip learned from the book: if you want to cancel your account for any reason, first delete your photo and posting, wait a few days, and then cancel. This way you ensure your posting won't be put up again, either in error by a back-up procedure, or purposely, because the webmasters want as many faces on their site as possible.
Readers are also led through what can be either the most fulfilling or the most dangerous part of online dating: moving from the virtual world to the real world. It doesn't forget to deal with the nuances of relationships in big cities, small towns or over a long distance.
Some readers will want to cut straight to the romantic chase, and they should turn to Part VI. The last two chapters go through the ten ways to screw up online dating and the ten ways to succeed at it.
After reading this book, even a real dummy couldn't screw up!
