A rose by any name would smell as sweet - Shakespeare once said that what he did not elaborate upon was the fact that although changing the name did not change the fragrance of the rose, but changing the color often changed the message it was intended to convey.
The tradition of giving roses-especially between lovers-started in the Victorian era. The different colors symbolized different emotions and let the receiver know of the sender's intentions. Here we are going to unfold the deep mysteries that the roses hold within their folds.
Red Rose
It is the color of passion and of deep love. A single red rose says "I love you" like nothing else. A red rose also symbolizes courage and respect. A bud of the same color appreciates beauty and youth.
White Rose
There is nothing purer than the color white. Unlike black, it is not a mixture of any other color thereby signifying purity, innocence, reverence, and sometimes even sorrow.
Yellow Rose
Yellow is a caring color - it shows caring and compassion but also stands for joy and happiness.
Pink Rose
Pink is a very feminine color and its presentation means that the sender acknowledges one's grace and gentility. A darker gradient of pink signifies gratitude and appreciation whereas lighter pink signifies admiration and sympathy.
Then there are the formations that send other signals, like two stems entwined to form one means an engagement or wedding. Whereas a full-blown rose over two buds signifies secrecy and withered, white roses imply that you have not made any impression at all. A crown of roses showcases the wearer's virtues and rose leaves are harbingers of hope.
No matter what the occasion and whom you intend to surprise with these beautiful creations - follow the tradition, or else you might be sending the wrong signal.
