It is not the canals of Venice, but if you are hoping to rev things up romantically with your honey, then this one-hour cruise on Alamitos Bay may be the answer. Floating through the bay is a lovely way to spend an evening--it certainly leaves more of an impression than dinner and a movie.

You cannot really get to the Hollywood sign, but you can park near the intersection of Beachwood Drive and Hollyridge Drive, walk up Hollyridge Drive to the beginning of Hollyridge Trail on the left. Following the ridge leads to Mulholland Trail, then to Mount Lee Drive and the best views from above and behind the sign. Reach the trail's summit on a clear day and enjoy an expansive southern view well past downtown to the east and west to the ocean.

Just south of Marina Del Rey, Dockweiler Beach is near the charming town of Playa del Rey, a neighborhood as nostalgic as it is upscale. The beach is quiet and there is a long bike track leading inland all the way across the Marina, up to and beyond the 405 freeway. Evenings are a tumult of volleyball games and bicyclists, but you can still expect to have a great time walking or lazing on the beach.

Paul Getty Trust's collection of mostly European art. Designed by architect Richard Meier, the 24-acre site offers a sweeping east-to-west panorama of everything from Hollywood to the Pacific Ocean--views worth a visit all by themselves. Best of all, admission is free.
