1. Peak's District   » Find Hotels
Peak's District
Peak's District
Peak District is Manchester's nearest countryside and is less than half an hour travel from the city center. If romancing nature is your idea of a romantic day out, and adventure outdoors is your mutual thrill, the National Park will send you into raptures. There are no peaks in Peak District; just gentle slopes, grassy hills, lakes, rivers, rocks, and stone walls.

The landscape is one of severe contrasts that abounds in public footpaths, which are ideal for a leisurely stroll in summer, but is tricky, even to the seasoned trekker in winter. The land rises above 2000 feet in elevation in most areas. There are several pretty villages in the valley nooks, picturesque in their appeal, and a few larger towns. Buxton is one town famous for its baths of natural spring water--a constant 28 degrees celcius, and therefore has many spas. The National Park holds a number of country houses, too. Ideal for a weekend in a pretty thatched cottage, in the company of the one you love.

2. The Caves Of Derbyshire   » Find Hotels
Derbyshire Caves
Derbyshire Caves
The Caves at Derbyshire offer a good time to the brave and the less adventurous alike. The Poole's Cavern at Buxton Country Park is a natural cave formation that is very impressive. The stalactites and stalagmites are quite spectacular and makes good viewing for all ages. The Treak Cliff Cavern at Castleton is even more impressive. It is a maze of galleries and passages of about a quarter mile in distance. You are looking at the finest stalactite/stalagmite formation in Britain. The Heights of Abraham Country Park and Caverns, is 1000 feet at its highest point, and there are two caves to visit, as well as a cable car ride down the hill. The most unique experience you will have is the Speedwell Cavern in Castleton. The visitors are rowed in a boat through a complex labyrinth of passages that were cut by primitive tools about two centuries ago.

3. Alderley's Edge   » Find Hotels
Alderley's Edge
Alderley's Edge
About 100 miles north of Manchester, (a two and a half hour car journey away) is the Hadrian's Wall, now declared a World Heritage Site. The wall is a reminder of the Roman rule, and is the most important Roman that remains in Britain. The length of the wall is seventy-three miles from Bowness to Wallsend, and it served as a formidable barrier until the Romans came to Britain. Thereafter, the wall was not maintained. The stones of the 12 ft. high wall were taken down in various places to allow local building activities. Still, the impression of grandeur remains and a walk along the wall is one to remember. There are several hotels, B&Bs, Inns, and Guest Houses in the area. A bit of history is always romantic and the quiet countryside, intimate walks, and tranquil surroundings may initiate more.

4. Snowdownia   » Find Hotels
Snowdownia
Snowdownia
Snowdonia is the purported birthplace of Merlin the wizard and the magical scenery and mesmerizing sights that unfold beyond the horizon are enough evidence to convince you that this is true. If the two of you are into mountaineering and camping, this is a five-day trip through some of the wildest and most exciting terrain, with rewarding views at every turn. Not so gung-ho about roughing it? No problem, you can stay at one of the cozy inns or hotels in the region and enjoy the sights just as well.
